What once was an activity that was reserved for royals and the elite, is now a fun-filled and exciting day out for everyone.
So, if you’re planning on visiting County Meath this year, consider coinciding your trip with one of the many horse racing festivals in the area.
This area of Ireland is home to two prestigious tracks, each of which has an exciting calendar of events to choose from.
Fairyhouse Racecourse
Home to the Irish Grand National Steeplechase and boasting modern facilities, this course has been operating since 1848 and is considered a must-see for all enthusiasts of the sport. The 1 mile and 6.5-furlong right-handed circuit has seen many prolific breeds, jockeys and trainers, both international and local, succeed.
In addition to regular weekly meetings, there are several exciting horse racing festivals on the calendar throughout the year, such as:
The Fairyhouse Easter festival - April
Brownstown Stakes – July
Royal Bond Novice Hurdle – December
However, if racing is not your idea of excitement, on Sundays when there is no race meeting, Fairyhouse hosts a market which sells farm-fresh produce and even has a car-boot sale on site.
Navan Racecourse
This flat course is especially known for hosting National Hunting Racing, which is a form of a steeplechase. With a host of modern facilities, private suites and world-class dining on site, your day at the races can become an elegant affair. Most importantly, Navan Racecourse is also home to an exciting racing calendar, which includes:
Family Day – May
Vintage Crop Stakes – May
Summer Ladies Day - June
Fortria Chase – November
Navan Racecourse private suites and grounds are also available to hire, should you wish to host your own event here.
